I began as a second year cadet with V J Ryan & Co after having completed my first year of a Bachelor of Business degree at UTS. The experience I have been able to gain here over the past few months whilst working alongside such incredible professionals has been invaluable. Working at V J Ryan & Co while concurrently continuing my studies has enabled me to step ahead of my peers and apply the theory taught in university to real life situations. I have had the responsibility of directly dealing with clients and assisting them with their various business related problems while being guided by a mentor along the way.

Personally, working in a smaller firm has been very rewarding as I have had the opportunity to complete interesting and challenging tasks in multiple areas of the firm. Over my time here, I have been involved in many areas including taxation, audit and various business services. Being able to work with and learn alongside other cadets has also enabled us to develop many transferrable skills, such as teamwork and collaboration, that cannot be acquired only from studies. No two days are ever the same at V J Ryan & Co as you are exposed to something new and different with each client you are given the responsibility of.

The friendly and approachable nature of staff enables a comfortable learning environment and I believe I have been able to significantly improve my knowledge, skills and general understanding of accounting and finance as a result. Balancing both studies and work has undoubtedly been a challenging but very rewarding experience, and I would have no regrets in my decision. I would urge all high school leavers who are interested in an accounting or business career to make the most of this opportunity and apply for the cadetship program.

I began a cadetship with V J Ryan & Co, after just completing my HSC. Working full time and studying a Bachelor of Business Degree at UTS part time has been an incredibly manageable process at V J Ryan & Co who have a genuine understanding and flexibility regarding timetabling and provide generous paid exam leave.

Similar aged cadet’s enables collaboration on university work and assignments which is compounded by the direct crossover of practical learning at work to numerous university subjects particularly in the Accounting and Finance majors.

Friendly and approachable colleagues deliver an accelerated learning experience where I have encountered a wide range of businesses and multiple areas of accounting including audit, tax and business services, all uniquely part of the experience at a small firm. A profound benefit of a small firm is the sense of accomplishment in completing interesting and challenging jobs from start to finish, providing more comprehensive skills and expertise required in the field of Accounting.
